Dewayne Duncan,
County Commission

An educator, real estate developer, and lifelong West Virginian, Dewayne Duncan leads with a vision for innovation and a passion for change.

Duncan holds a Bachelor's Degree from The University of Charleston and a Master's Degree from Marshall University. Prior to transitioning full-time into operating his residential and commercial real estate development company, he spent over 20 years in the public education system, where he worked as a teacher and principal assisting children in attaining their educational needs.

Duncan then went on to work at the West Virginia Department of Education where he served as the Executive Director of the Office of Middle School and Secondary Education. In this role, Duncan assisted in writing and monitoring state policy and code to ensure quality educational outcomes for hundreds of thousands of students being educated across West Virginia.

Dewayne is very active in our community. Duncan has chaired and hosted several fundraising events, including the 2017 CAMC Foundation Gala. He serves on several boards and committees in the Charleston area, which include the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Education Committee and Distribution Committee, Charleston Westside Board of Advisors, and Westside Urban Design Committee.

In addition to his work on these committees, Duncan also serves as a member of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Foundation Board. His work on this board includes being the Scholarship Chair for the medical school, which is responsible for securing funds to make it possible for medical students to receive scholarships in an effort to reduce the cost of their medical school expenses. Duncan is passionate about the work on this board, because of both the economic and real-world impact it creates for Kanawha County residents by the creation of high-quality physicians to work, live, and provide the highest quality of medical services to the residents of the county.

Duncan has lived in the historic Edgewood community on Charleston’s Westside for the past 15 years. He looks forward to serving not only his community but every community in Kanawha County as County Commissioner to ensure economic growth and progress for all. Duncan maintains the kind of economic development being spurred by himself and other real estate and small business developers in his community, Westside Elk City District, is possible in all areas of the county.  He vows to work closely with municipality leaders and community members throughout the county to promote and ignite growth for all of Kanawha County.
